Damascus University Expands Digital Education Plans

Damascus University signed two cooperation agreements with the Saeed Foundation for Development establishing a modern digital library, launching a specialized artificial intelligence (AI) research center, and strengthening the university’s digital infrastructure. The agreements were signed during a ceremony held at the university’s headquarters in Damascus as part of efforts to modernize higher education and scientific research in Syria.

Digital Library and Research Expansion

The first agreement focuses on creating a smart digital library on the university’s Baramkeh campus. The project includes constructing a dedicated building and equipping it with computers, networks, and modern digital systems designed to meet international standards. Officials said the project is expected to take approximately three years to complete.

The second agreement establishes an artificial intelligence center within the Faculty of Informatics Engineering. The center will support multiple academic disciplines, including engineering, medicine, basic sciences, and the humanities.

University officials said the center aims to provide researchers and graduate students with advanced technological tools and infrastructure while encouraging interdisciplinary research involving AI applications.

Education and Reconstruction Efforts

Wafiq Saeed, president of the foundation, said the projects support education and scientific research in Syria during a period of reconstruction and institutional development. Speaking to Syria TV, Saeed praised Damascus University’s historical role in educating generations of Syrian and Arab professionals and leaders. He described the institution as a longstanding center of knowledge and academic achievement.

Saeed also pointed to what he described as broader political and social changes in Syria, saying the current authorities recognize education as a key component of the country’s future development. He described the university administration as an ambitious partner with a forward-looking vision that has strengthened confidence in cooperation between the two sides.

Advancing Digital Transformation

Damascus University President Dr. Mustafa Saaim al-Dahr praised the support provided by the Saeed Foundation and emphasized the university’s commitment to advancing scientific research and academic development.

Dahr said the digital library will rely on modern technologies, including subscriptions to academic databases that will allow students and researchers to access scientific journals, books, and research materials. He added that the facility will include AI-powered software designed to assist researchers in their work.

According to Dahr, the initiative forms part of a broader push toward digital transformation in both academic research and university administration. He said the AI center is expected to begin operating by the start of the next academic year, with work already underway to complete the required infrastructure and technical preparations.

Founded in 1984, the Saeed Foundation is a nonprofit educational organization that provides fully funded master’s degree scholarships for students from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine in partnership with universities in the UK, including University of Oxford. The organization says its programs aim to prepare future leaders capable of contributing to development in their communities.
