Idlib Book Fair 2024: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

The Idlib Book Fair 2024, now in its fourth year, opens today, offering a celebration of literature, culture, and intellectual exchange in northern Syria. Held at the Idlib City Cultural Center, the event has become a cultural cornerstone, blending the region’s rich heritage with contemporary creativity.

This year’s fair, themed “Bridging Tradition and Modernity,” is poised to be its most expansive yet. With a wide array of activities and exhibitions, the event aims to engage visitors of all ages and interests. Highlights include a curated selection of books, designed exhibitions, and seminars reflecting the central theme.

Internationally renowned figures headline the fair, including Wadah Khanfar, former Director General of Al Jazeera, who will participate in a panel discussion on Syria’s complex sociopolitical landscape. Dr. Nayef Bin Nahar, Director of the Ibn Khaldun Center at Qatar University, will address societal development and cultural identity. Saudi preacher and author Ahmad bin Yusuf al-Sayed will contribute to discussions on modern religious discourse, while Sheikh Ali Muhyiddin Al-Qara Daghi, President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, brings his expertise in Islamic scholarship.

The fair also features Palestinian political activist Sami Amin Al-Arian and Egyptian family counselor Dr. Hala Samir, both of whom will participate in various panels and seminars.

Among the fair’s standout attractions is the Arabic Calligraphy Corner, where attendees can explore the artistry of Arabic script, and the Art Corner, showcasing contemporary paintings. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Antiques Corner, which offers a glimpse into Syria’s past through traditional tools, ancient utensils, and crafted swords.

The Idlib Book Fair 2024 is more than just a showcase of literature and art; it is a forum for intellectual exchange. Seminars will bring together scholars and cultural figures to discuss topics ranging from literature and politics to social issues and cultural identity. A notable session will explore the role of think tanks in societal development, led by Dr. Reda Boudra and Dr. Nayef bin Nahar.

Evening poetry sessions will lend a more intimate atmosphere to the fair, featuring local and international poets. The Book Fair Salon will host informal discussions on topics from science and culture to revolution and societal change, with sessions broadcast live on social media.

This year’s fair stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of a community that thrives despite challenges, offering visitors not just books and art but also a powerful reminder of the enduring influence of culture and knowledge in shaping society.
