The Syrian Transitional Government (STG) has named Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani as the country’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, signaling a new chapter in Syria’s international relations following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Born in Al-Hasakah Governorate in 1987, Al-Shaibani comes from the Bani Shaiban tribe and has been a steadfast participant in the Syrian revolution since its inception in 2011.

A Revolutionary Legacy

Al-Shaibani’s journey reflects the tumultuous path of Syria’s revolution. As a young man, he moved with his family to Damascus and earned a degree in English Language and Literature from Damascus University in 2009. When protests erupted in 2011, he joined the movement for change and has remained a consistent presence in its ranks.

In the years that followed, Al-Shaibani became a pivotal figure in shaping Syria’s political landscape. He helped establish the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) and later founded the Department of Political Affairs, where he forged connections with UN agencies and international organizations to facilitate humanitarian efforts in northwestern Syria.

Academic & Professional Achievements

Al-Shaibani has balanced his revolutionary activism with academic pursuits. He earned a master’s degree in political science and foreign relations from Turkey in 2022 and is currently completing a doctorate in the same field. Additionally, he is finalizing an MBA at the American University, showcasing a blend of academic rigor and practical expertise.

During his tenure as Director of Political Affairs, Al-Shaibani operated under various pseudonyms, common among revolutionaries to protect their family and relatives, Naseem, Abu Aisha, and Zaid Al-Attar were all names he used during the revolution. He met extensively with diplomatic representatives and officials from myriad international organizations. These experiences have positioned him as a seasoned diplomat capable of navigating complex political landscapes.

Focus on Rebuilding Regional Relations

The General Command in Damascus announced Al-Shaibani’s appointment through an official statement and photo, emphasizing the critical role he will play in rebuilding Syria’s regional and international relations.

His work is expected to focus on resuming dialogue with countries in the region and strengthening partnerships with international stakeholders whose interests intersect with the Syrian revolution. The appointment comes at a time of significant political and field transformations, as Syria’s new government seeks to establish stability and legitimacy on the global stage.

A New Diplomatic Era

Al-Shaibani’s appointment as foreign minister marks a decisive step for the STG as it positions itself to address the challenges of post-Assad Syria. His revolutionary roots, academic credentials, and diplomatic experience suggest a focused approach to rebuilding Syria’s international standing while fostering domestic inclusivity and equality.

Observers will closely watch how Al-Shaibani navigates regional dynamics and establishes Syria’s voice on the global stage, as the nation seeks stability and reconciliation in the wake of its revolution.
