A delegation from Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) concluded a visit to Qatar on Friday, signing a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation in the civil aviation sector.
The agreement, signed in Doha on Feb. 16, came following an official invitation from Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and marked a significant step toward enhancing bilateral ties in aviation services, infrastructure, and training. Officials from both sides emphasized their commitment to advancing cooperation with a shared focus on mutual interests.
Expanding Aviation Cooperation
During discussions, Syrian and Qatari officials explored ways to improve collaboration in civil aviation services, including air navigation and technical infrastructure. A key component of the agreement involves cooperation in training and development, with Qatar expressing its readiness to support the professional growth of Syrian aviation personnel.
Following the signing ceremony at the Qatari CAA headquarters, the Syrian delegation visited the Qatar Airways Operations Department, where potential future partnerships between Syrian Airlines and Qatar Airways were discussed.
The delegation also toured the Air Traffic Controllers Training Center in Doha, leading to an agreement that will allow Syrian air traffic controllers to undergo specialized training in Qatar.
Commitment to Training and Development
As part of the memorandum, both sides agreed on initiatives aimed at enhancing aviation expertise. One of the key aspects of the agreement involves sending Syrian pilots to Doha, where they will participate in advanced training programs designed to improve their technical skills and operational knowledge.
Additionally, the agreement outlines plans for Syrian aviation personnel to undergo specialized training at Qatari aviation training centers and the Qatar Aviation Academy. These programs aim to equip Syrian aviation professionals with the latest industry practices, ensuring higher standards in air traffic management and airline operations.
Qatari officials expressed their willingness to accommodate Syrian trainees within their institutions, signaling efforts to support the rehabilitation and modernization of Syria’s aviation sector. The focus on education and professional development reflects a long-term commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering a skilled workforce capable of meeting international standards.
High-Level Participation
The visit featured participation from senior aviation officials from both nations. The Qatari delegation was led by Muhammad Faleh Al-Hajri, acting chairman of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, alongside Khalid Abdullah Al-Nasri, director of the Air Transport Department, and Issa Abdullah Al-Maliki, Qatar’s permanent member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Representing Syria were Ashhad Al-Salibi, chairman of the GACA, Sameh Arabi, advisor to the chairman, and Abdul Bari Al-Saj, assistant chairman of the authority.
A Step Toward Closer Cooperation
The visit, which concluded with an official farewell to the Syrian delegation, was seen as an important step in strengthening ties between the two countries. The agreements reached are expected to enhance Syria’s operational and training capabilities, laying the groundwork for continued collaboration in the sector.
