As Eid al-Fitr approaches, Syrian authorities have announced a series of measures to facilitate religious observances, ensure public safety, and provide financial relief to citizens. The Ministry of Endowments has issued guidelines on Zakat al-Fitr (charitable tax due at the end of Ramadan) and Fidyah (expiation for those unable to fast), while security forces in Idlib have implemented traffic and safety plans. Additionally, the government has declared the date of the official holiday and approved a financial grant for state employees and pensioners.
Zakat al-Fitr & Fidyah Guidelines
The Syrian Ministry of Endowments has set the amount for Zakat al-Fitr at 15,000 Syrian pounds ($1.50) per person for the year 1446 AH (2025 AD). The ministry emphasized that Zakat al-Fitr is a religious obligation meant to purify the fasting person and assist the poor. It must be paid before the Eid prayer, though early payments a day or two in advance are permitted. It can also be given in cash or as staple foods, including wheat, lentils, rice, dates, or bulgur.
The ministry also outlined the regulations for Fidyah, a required payment for those unable to fast due to age or chronic illness. The amount is set at 15,000 Syrian pounds per day of missed fasting, and it can be paid in one lump sum. The ministry encouraged Muslims abroad to send their Zakat al-Fitr and Fidyah contributions to Syria, stressing the importance of timely payments.
Security Measures in Idlib
To ensure safety during the Eid shopping rush, the Idlib Governorate Police Command has launched a traffic and security plan. Lieutenant Colonel Maher Hilal announced increased police presence, road diversions, and restrictions on motorcycles in market areas to reduce congestion.
The plan includes partial road closures in busy commercial districts, allowing vendors to set up stalls without obstructing pedestrian movement. Hilal confirmed that these measures, which began on March 20, will be implemented across the governorate based on available resources.
In addition, the Ministry of Interior activated an emergency response branch in Idlib to provide aid and assistance to residents during the holiday period.
Eid Holiday & Government Grant
The Syrian government has declared a public holiday from Sunday, March 30, to Thursday, April 3, in observance of Eid al-Fitr. The announcement aligns with state labor laws and allows essential public services to continue operating as needed.
President Ahmad al-Sharaa has also approved a one-time financial grant for state employees, both civilian and military, equivalent to one month’s salary. Pensioners will receive a similar grant equal to one month’s pension, with the payments exempt from taxes and deductions. The initiative aims to support workers and retirees during the holiday season.
As Syrians prepare to celebrate Eid amid economic hardships and security challenges, these measures provide essential support for religious obligations, public safety, and financial stability.
