Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has announced the formation of an independent committee to investigate recent attacks on civilians and security forces along the country’s coast. In a speech Sunday evening, Sharaa vowed to hold accountable those responsible, including remnants of the ousted Assad regime.

Government Launches Investigation Amid Unrest

Following coordinated assaults on security checkpoints, public institutions, and hospitals in Tartous and Latakia, Sharaa ordered a fact-finding committee composed of legal experts and senior officials. The committee will investigate the attacks and ensure those responsible are prosecuted.

The dangers we face today are not just passing threats but the result of opportunistic attempts by forces seeking to perpetuate chaos and destroy what remains of our beloved homeland,” Sharaa said. “We will not tolerate the remnants of Assad, who have attacked our army forces, terrorized civilians, and spread chaos in safe areas.” He also announced the formation of a higher committee to preserve civil peace, which will work directly with local communities to strengthen security.

Casualties & Accountability

Fighting in the wake of a terror campaign launched by Assad loyalists has left hundreds of dead, including criminals, security personnel, and civilians. Reports have also emerged alleging violations committed by factions supporting government security efforts.

Sharaa stressed that while law enforcement will pursue those responsible, no overreach or mistreatment of prisoners would be tolerated. “No one will be above the law, and anyone whose hands are stained with Syrian blood will face justice sooner rather than later,” he said. Interior Ministry official Sajidullah al-Deek reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accountability, stating that oversight bodies would investigate any reported abuses.

Journalist Hanadi Zahlout, who lost three family members in the attacks, has called for greater transparency and security measures. Sharaa personally contacted Zahlout to express condolences and reassure her of the government’s commitment to justice. During their conversation, he informed her about the investigative committee’s formation. Zahlout later confirmed that evidence related to the attacks had been transferred to the General Security Department. “The authorities must take the people’s demands seriously and ensure that such crimes do not happen again,” she told Al-Arabiya TV.

Restoring Stability

With military operations entering their second phase, government forces are securing rural and mountainous areas to prevent further violence. Sharaa reassured Syrians that order would be restored and that the country’s progress would not be reversed. “Syria has moved forward and will not take a single step backward,” he declared. “Rest assured, it remains under God’s protection and care.”
