Syria and Jordan Discuss Developing Joint Free Zone

The Syrian-Jordanian joint free zone has returned to the focus of interest for both Syria and Jordan due to its representation as a model for joint economic and productive work between the two countries and the financial and commercial benefits it provides for them as well.

The free zone is witnessing active trade at a time when both Jordan and Syria are working to facilitate procedures, stimulate economic activity, and develop infrastructure with the aim of enhancing trade cooperation between the two countries.

Qutaiba Badawi, Chairman of Syria’s General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, discussed with a high-level Jordanian delegation headed by Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply Yarub Qudah ways to develop economic relations and strengthen the Syrian-Jordanian partnership.

Historic Ties and Modernizing Infrastructure

During his reception of the Jordanian delegation at the Nassib border crossing with Jordan, Badawi emphasized the depth of historical relations between the two countries. The two sides conducted a field tour within the facilities of the crossing to observe the working mechanisms and the facilities provided for the movement of travelers and trucks, as well as the procedures followed to expedite the flow of trade exchange between the two nations.

The tour also included the Syrian-Jordanian joint free zone company, where the company’s director presented a comprehensive overview of its operational status, including its main activities, performance statistics from the past period, and plans to develop logistics services and attract investments.

In the presence of both sides, a general assembly meeting was held for the free zone company at the authority’s headquarters, where attendees reviewed work statistics for the first half of this year. They discussed a package of proposals aimed at increasing economic activity, updating infrastructure, and developing digital systems to keep pace with modern trade requirements, thus enhancing the position of the free zone as a regional logistics center serving both countries.

Creating Economic and Regional Stability

At the conclusion of the visit, both sides affirmed their commitment to continue coordination and joint work to create an attractive investment environment and expand areas of cooperation that positively impact bilateral trade movement and contribute to supporting the national economy in both Syria and Jordan.

Economic cooperation between Jordan and Syria is considered a fundamental pillar for enhancing stability and development in the region, as both countries enjoy close geographical and historical ties that prepare them for fruitful economic collaboration.
