Authorities have arrested multiple police officers and officials after the death of Abdurahman Jajoul, a young man in custody at the Kalasa police station, the Interior Ministry confirmed Monday, August 11. Those detained include the duty officer, the local officials, and the station’s lead investigator.
Col. Muhammad Abdulghanni, commander of Internal Security in Aleppo Province, said an investigative committee has been formed to examine the case “in full transparency.” Jajoul’s body has been sent to the forensic department to determine the exact cause of death. Legal action will follow against anyone found negligent or complicit, Abdulghanni said.
The arrests follow sweeping ministry reforms and a mid-July presidential directive emphasizing protection of citizens’ rights, prohibiting abuse under any circumstances, and ordering immediate legal measures against violators regardless of rank or position.
Deadly Ambush and Explosive Attack in Daraa
In Daraa Province, one Internal Security Forces member was killed and five wounded on August 11 when an armed gang ambushed a convoy near Sahwa. The group was escorting commercial goods bound for Suwayda. Several drivers were kidnapped, vehicles stolen, and goods looted before security units freed two hostages and arrested eight suspects. Three people remain missing.
A day earlier, on August 10, three security officers were injured when an explosive device detonated on the Izra–Basr al-Harir road. Authorities say their condition is stable. Brig. Gen. Shaher Jabr Omran said deployments along Daraa’s border with Suwayda remain in place to prevent further unrest.
Violence and Arrests in Deir Ezzor
Security operations in Deir Ezzor Province have targeted both criminal suspects and armed factions. On August 10, Col. Dirar al-Shamlan announced the arrest of three individuals accused in the killing of media activist Kindi al-Adai, whose body was found hanged in his home in Joura. Adai had recently returned from Germany, where he worked to raise awareness of local conditions.
Separately, on the 9th, unidentified gunmen killed a Defense Ministry recruit and a civilian in two incidents in eastern Deir Ezzor. The region has also seen clashes between Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and tribal fighters, leaving a 60-year-old civilian dead in Darnaj. Local groups accuse the SDF of continued arbitrary arrests and raids in the area.
Murder Suspect Captured in Idlib
In northern Idlib, Internal Security Director Col. Abdulghanni reported the August 9 arrest of Khalid al-Ahmad, suspected in the killing of Maher Abdurazzaq in Dana. Authorities seized weapons, prohibited materials, and cash from the suspect’s residence. Investigations are ongoing before referral to the judiciary.
Across the incidents, officials stressed the government’s commitment to reform and its zero-tolerance policy toward violations of citizen or detainee rights. “The law will apply to every offender,” Abdulghanni said, underscoring the state’s focus on both accountability and maintaining public security.
