White Helmets Continue Restoration of Rastan Bridge in Homs

In a remarkable demonstration of resilience and community spirit, the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, continue the restoration of the Rastan Bridge, a crucial infrastructure link in the Homs Governorate. This achievement not only signifies a step towards rebuilding war-torn areas but also highlights the ongoing efforts of local volunteers dedicated to humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Syria.

The White Helmets continues its work on the Rastan Bridge restoration project in Homs Governorate, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project is implemented with support from the Syria Humanitarian Fund (SHF), and in coordination with the Ministry of Transport. The project is a strategic route linking the north and south of the country via the M5 International Highway.

Abdurazzaq al-Khatib, Projects Coordinator of the White Helmets, stated that restoration work is expected to be completed early 2026. He confirmed that, after the restoration is complete, the bridge will be able to safely and fully accommodate heavy traffic and passengers.

Engineering teams confirmed that the restoration work is proceeding according to the scheduled plan to ensure the bridge’s return to full service and connect Syrian regions more safely and effectively.

The Rastan Bridge and Dam sustained significant damage towards the end of the ousted regime’s rule as a result of direct Russian bombing that targeted vital facilities in the city.

Despite the damage to the bridge, vehicles continued to cross it for a period of time before the government closed the road. Its closure complicated movement and trade between the northern and southern Syrian regions and exacerbated the suffering of civilians who rely on it for their daily lives. The restoration of this bridge is seen as a critical component in revitalizing the local economy and enhancing access to essential services.
