Saudi-Turkish Partnerships with Syria to Develop Energy Projects

The General Electric Transmission and Distribution Corporation signed several memoranda of understanding in the presence of Assistant Minister of Energy for Electricity Engineer Omar Shakrouq and Saudi Arabia’s Acting Deputy Minister of Energy for Renewable Energy Abdulaziz bin Khalid al-Yusuf. The agreements, made with the Saudi companies Al-Hirafi and Saklco, call for the implementation of photovoltaic and wind energy projects with a combined capacity of up to 500 megawatts.

In addition, an agreement was signed with the Syrian-Turkish company STE to purchase 100 megawatts of electricity generated from solar power. Officials described the deal as a significant step toward enhancing the energy sector in Syria and advancing the country’s renewable energy goals.

Expanding Renewable Energy as a National Priority

These initiatives come as part of the government’s efforts expanding the use of renewable resources and achieving sustainability in electricity production, at a time when Syria continues to face serious challenges in meeting national energy demands.

Under the new agreements, solar and wind power projects will be developed with total capacities exceeding 1,000 megawatts—an investment that highlights growing regional confidence in the Syrian market and the role of energy development in national reconstruction.

Regional Cooperation and Economic Impact

The memoranda between the Ministry of Electricity and Saudi companies outline renewable energy projects totaling 500 megawatts: 300 megawatts from solar power and 200 megawatts from wind power. The total value of these projects is estimated at around $400 million.

Separately, a power purchasing agreement was signed with the Syrian-Turkish company STA, which plans to construct a solar power generation station with a capacity of 600 megawatts.

Officials said that the involvement of Saudi companies such as Al-Hirafi and Saklco—alongside the Syrian-Turkish company STE—demonstrates a growing regional interest in Syria’s reconstruction and energy market. They emphasize the energy sector remains a strategic national priority and a cornerstone for sustainable economic growth in the coming phase.
