Syria Hosts Syrian-Austrian-German Economic Forum

The Syrian-Austrian-German Economic Forum 2025 convened in Damascus under the auspices of the Syrian Ministry of Economy, bringing together representatives from the EU and business delegations from Austria and Germany. The event marked a new phase in Syria’s growing economic engagement with European partners.

The forum featured several sessions addressing key economic priorities, including investment laws and incentives, transportation and communication infrastructure, energy development, digital transformation, technological innovation, and reconstruction and urban planning.

Strengthening Economic Partnerships

Maher al-Hassan, deputy minister of economy and industry for internal trade affairs, said the forum sends “a clear message of confidence” in Syria’s recovery and reflects a shared desire to deepen cooperation with Austria and Germany. He added that the Syrian government is working “diligently to create a supportive investment environment” and to establish frameworks that encourage sustainable development and innovation.

Olaf Hofmann, president of the Arab-German Chamber of Commerce, praised Syria’s recent efforts to enhance foreign relations and economic openness, expressing Germany’s interest in supporting the revival of Syria’s economy.

Similarly, Werner Vasslaband, president of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, described Syria as “an important strategic center in the region,” citing its skilled human capital, natural resources, and broad investment potential.

German Ambassador Klimens Haakh and Austrian Ambassador Isabel Rauscher reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to building partnerships with Syria’s business community and supporting reconstruction and development efforts. Both diplomats highlighted the readiness of European institutions to share expertise and experience with their Syrian counterparts.

Strategic Projects and Sector Development

Minister of Communications and Technology Abdulsalam Haykal presented an overview of Syria’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives and technological infrastructure development. He emphasized the value of international cooperation—particularly with Germany—in promoting innovation and expanding the country’s digital framework.

Ibrahim al-Adhan, director of planning and international cooperation at the Ministry of Energy, outlined Syria’s plan to implement strategic projects in oil, electricity, and water sectors. He said the goal is to achieve economic and service integration that will rehabilitate vital systems affected by conflict and sanctions.

Ali Esbr, director of land transport at the Ministry of Transportation, detailed major projects in the transportation sector, including toll highways under the BOT system, the Aleppo-Damascus railway corridor, and the connection of dry ports and free zones with primary transport routes. He underscored Syria’s geostrategic position linking Europe, the Gulf, Iraq, and the Mediterranean, which gives it a pivotal role in regional and international logistics.

A Platform for Partnership and Growth

Officials said the forum provides a vital platform for public-private dialogue, encouraging exchange of expertise and ideas to improve the investment climate. By showcasing new opportunities and reforms, the event strengthens Syria’s profile as a promising investment destination and a potential hub for regional cooperation.
