Syria Rejoins International Francophone University Agency

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Marwan al-Halabi confirmed that the reinstatement of Syrian universities’ membership in the International University Agency of the Francophonie (AUF) marks an important step toward strengthening international scientific cooperation. Syria’s membership was suspended for over 15 years.

A Strategic Return to the International Stage

Halabi announced that the AUF will soon reopen its office in Syria and resume operations, describing the move as a milestone in restoring Syria’s position on the regional and global map of higher education.

“This step helps Syrian scientific institutions reconnect with international networks and build meaningful partnerships with universities and research centers in Francophone and other countries,” Halabi said. He emphasized that such cooperation would be based on respect, mutual benefit, and the exchange of expertise.

Science as a Tool for Progress and Peace

Dr. Halabi underscored the essential role of scientific collaboration, describing science as “the weapon of survival and the key to renaissance.” He stressed that cooperation and solidarity among nations in the scientific field are the true guarantees of a secure and sustainable future.

The minister also highlighted the significance of the Fifth Conference of Higher Education Ministers of the AUF, held recently in Dakar, Senegal. He noted that the meeting came at a time of mounting global challenges in education, science, and development, which demand collective intellectual and human efforts to build a better future.

Founded in Montreal, Canada, in 1961, the International University Agency of the Francophonie is a global association of universities and higher education institutions that use French as a language of instruction, in whole or in part. The agency works to promote academic and scientific cooperation and to facilitate the exchange of knowledge among member institutions in Francophone countries.
