Tartous Port Begins Transformation Journey Under DP World Leadership

In a move marking a historic turning point for Syria’s transport and logistics sector, DP World has officially begun its operations at the Port of Tartous following the handover from the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports.

This step comes within the framework of a 30-year concession agreement that includes an investment plan of up to AED 3 billion (USD 800 million), making it one of the largest foreign investments in Syria in recent years. The agreement aims to support economic recovery and transform Tartous into a high-efficiency trade and logistics hub.

The Launch of Operations and the Beginning of the Transformation

The port recently witnessed the entry into service of the new tugboat Al-Fath, signaling the start of the development phase. Fahad Al-Banna, CEO of DP World Tartous, stated, “We have embarked on the journey of transforming the Port of Tartous into a world-class maritime gateway through close cooperation with the Syrian government and the General Authority for Ports.”

The company is currently conducting a full assessment of the port’s infrastructure, including equipment, berth readiness, and yard and warehouse facilities. This stage includes technical surveys, operational studies, and design planning to create a detailed roadmap for redevelopment.

In the near term, work will focus on deepening marine access channels, basins, and berths to achieve optimal depths. Existing handling equipment will be upgraded and replaced, and new specialized assets introduced to meet growing demand for bulk and general cargo.

Digital Transformation and Competency Development

DP World will implement advanced digital platforms to improve operational efficiency and transparency. At the same time, employee training programs and procedural improvements will be carried out to increase productivity and reduce vessel waiting times in line with global standards.

The company also prioritized safety, conducting comprehensive audits and specialized training programs ensuring all port operations meet the highest international standards.

In the medium term, the redevelopment program will include upgrading the port’s infrastructure and superstructure, expanding handling and storage capacities, investing in advanced bulk cargo handling systems, and constructing new container and bulk cargo facilities.

This project represents a major milestone in the history of Syrian ports, ushering in a new era in which Syria works to rehabilitate its logistics infrastructure, strengthen its national economy, and reassert its position as a key regional logistics hub.
