Minister of Transport Yarb Badr met with a delegation from the Qatari firm UrbaCon Holding (UCC) to discuss proposed visions and plans for developing the road leading to Damascus International Airport. The project forms part of a broader investment package aimed at supporting Syria’s economic and logistical recovery.
Comprehensive Development Strategy
The UCC delegation presented an integrated plan to develop the road extending from Damascus International Airport through the city of Damascus and reaching the Jdeidat Yabous crossing. The road has been divided into four segments based on patterns of use and the characteristics of surrounding areas.
The proposal included road rehabilitation and surface treatment, coordinated color schemes, modern lighting poles, landscaping and tree planting, sidewalks, and updated traffic signage, all aimed at ensuring an orderly urban appearance and achieving the highest traffic safety standards.
The presentation also reviewed international models for airport gateway designs, with the goal of developing a modern main entrance to Damascus International Airport reflecting Syria’s new national visual identity and aligning with global standards.
Minister Badr stressed the strategic importance of the project, noting that it could serve as a cornerstone for attracting larger investments in the energy, tourism, and transportation sectors, while reinforcing Damascus’s position as a potential regional logistics hub. He emphasized the need to prepare standardized designs and submit them to the ministry, along with a proposal for a follow-up meeting to discuss technical details and implementation timelines.
Supporting Reconstruction and Infrastructure Modernization
UCC Holding leads an international alliance supporting the reconstruction of Syria’s energy and infrastructure sectors. The signing of final investment contracts for the expansion of Damascus International Airport represents a significant milestone in this cooperative effort.
The project falls within the Ministry of Transport’s broader efforts to modernize road transport infrastructure, improve traffic safety in line with international standards, and reflect the new national visual identity. It also aims to strengthen partnerships with experienced regional and international companies and benefit from global expertise in designing and implementing major road projects, particularly those connected to airports and border crossings, contributing to economic development and enhancing the image of Syria’s transport sector.
