National Forum Highlights Women’s Role in Stability and Recovery

The first National Forum to promote the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda was launched in Idlib under the slogan “Syrian Women Towards Peace.” Organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in partnership with Nordic countries and UN Women, the forum aims to strengthen the role of Syrian women in shaping policies related to peacebuilding and national recovery.

Idlib as a Venue for National Dialogue

Opening the two-day forum, held in both Idlib and Damascus, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Qabawat highlighted the importance of hosting the event in Idlib, describing the city as a meeting point for all Syrians.

She affirmed that the dialogue addressed essential issues such as civil peace and transitional justice, with participation from community leaders and international partners involved in supporting Syria’s stabilization efforts.

Women in Peacebuilding and Recovery

Sessions on the first day focused on the contributions of women to local peace initiatives and post-conflict recovery. Huda al-Atassi, Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Humanitarian Relief Organization, emphasized that peace is the basis for long-term stability.

She stated that the forum’s outcomes would be presented as a joint working document to relevant decision-making bodies, with the aim of translating discussions into practical measures supporting the recovery process.

Civil society activist Nahil al-Zarba addressed the forum’s discussions on expanding women’s participation in public and political life. She stressed the importance of giving priority to supporting survivors of gender-based violence and addressing the social challenges they face.

Dialogue on Transitional Justice and Economic Participation

On the second day, the forum convened in Damascus, where the discussions shifted toward women’s role in transitional justice, economic recovery, and national peace efforts. Participants examined the connection between empowerment, economic opportunities, and the development of inclusive policies that contribute to long-term stability.

The forum reflects expanding national and international engagement with issues affecting women’s participation in public life. Despite ongoing challenges, the gathering highlighted a shared interest in ensuring that women have an active role in shaping Syria’s future, particularly in areas related to recovery, justice, and peacebuilding.
