On the sidelines of the 42nd session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Housing and Reconstruction in Doha, the Syrian Minister of Public Works and Housing held a series of meetings and field visits aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation with Qatar in housing, infrastructure, and smart urban development. The discussions come within Syria’s broader efforts to benefit from regional expertise and partnerships as part of its post-war reconstruction and urban recovery process.
Strengthening Infrastructure Partnerships
During a meeting with Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Syrian and Qatari officials discussed prospects for cooperation in implementing and managing public works and infrastructure projects. The Syrian side expressed its interest in benefiting from Qatar’s advanced experience in planning, execution, and oversight, particularly in large-scale infrastructure development.
The talks also addressed the possibility of forming joint technical committees, exchanging expertise, and cooperating in project management, quality control, and modern planning methodologies that could support Syria’s reconstruction priorities.
Expanding Cooperation in Social Housing
The Syrian Minister also met with Qatar’s Minister of Social Development and Family Affairs, Buthaina bint Ali al-Jaber al-Nuaimi, where discussions focused on social and development-oriented housing programs. The Syrian side highlighted the scale of housing challenges following the damage of more than 1.3 million housing units, stressing the need for sustainable and inclusive solutions.
Qatari officials presented successful models for supporting low-income families through integrated housing programs that take into account social inclusion, sustainability, and accessibility, offering insights that could inform future cooperation in Syria’s social housing sector.
Exploring Smart City Models
As part of the visit, the Syrian delegation toured Lusail Smart City, where they were briefed on its advanced systems based on artificial intelligence and digital transformation. The tour included visits to central control rooms overseeing infrastructure operations, security, and traffic management.
The delegation also reviewed the Hazoum real estate project, which showcases integrated urban planning through pre-prepared infrastructure and sustainable design, providing a practical model for future urban development initiatives in Syria.
Investment Opportunities in Reconstruction
In discussions with Sheikh Hamad bin Talal al-Thani, CEO of Qatari Diar, the Syrian side emphasized the importance of Qatari private sector participation in Syria’s reconstruction phase. The talks highlighted Syria’s potential as a promising investment environment, particularly in housing, urban development, and infrastructure projects.
The Syrian Minister underscored that cooperation with experienced Qatari companies could play a meaningful role in accelerating reconstruction and introducing modern urban solutions.
These meetings reflect a broader Arab effort to exchange expertise and support sustainable development and reconstruction across the region, reinforcing shared commitments to rebuilding cities and improving living conditions in both countries.
