On the occasion of Liberation Day, the Syrian Ministry of Education, in cooperation with World Vision International, reopened 15 newly rehabilitated schools in Damascus Countryside governorate. The initiative forms part of a broader national effort to restore educational infrastructure and provide safe, functional learning environments for students returning to schools after years of disruption.
The rehabilitation work included upgrading classrooms, installing new doors and windows, replacing furniture, repainting interiors and exteriors, renovating schoolyards, and improving electrical systems. These improvements aim to create conditions conducive to learning and academic stability.
Addressing Overcrowding and Educational Access
The reopening of schools comes amid increased pressure on the education system due to the return of displaced families and rising enrollment. Education officials emphasized that restoring schools is essential to reducing classroom overcrowding and ensuring equitable access to education.
Education authorities reported that dozens of schools in Damascus Countryside have already been fully rehabilitated, with additional facilities currently under restoration. Nationwide, hundreds of schools have been repaired, with many more undergoing rehabilitation, guided by the principle of guaranteeing a safe educational environment for all students.
A Partnership for Quality
World Vision International described the project as a significant step toward improving education quality through close coordination with national institutions. The organization noted that the rapid completion of rehabilitation work reflects effective collaboration and shared priorities in strengthening Syria’s education system.
This initiative builds on earlier efforts launched on Liberation Day, when more than a hundred rehabilitated schools were inaugurated across several governorates, reinforcing the momentum of educational recovery.
Parallel Support from Saudi Arabia
In a parallel development, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) signed an agreement to rehabilitate 10 additional damaged schools in Damascus Countryside and Homs governorates. The project includes school renovation, furnishing, and the installation of solar energy systems to enhance sustainability and reliability. The Saudi initiative aligns with ongoing national efforts to reactivate schools and improve learning conditions, focusing on creating safe and attractive educational spaces for students and teachers alike.
Together, these Syrian and Saudi-supported initiatives represent a meaningful contribution to restoring the education sector. By rebuilding infrastructure, easing overcrowding, and improving learning environments, the efforts aim to stabilize education, support teachers, and help return a sense of normalcy to the lives of Syrian children as recovery continues nationwide.
