President Recep Erdogan congratulated Syrians on the first anniversary of Liberation Day, praising the country’s post-Assad trajectory and pledging continued Turkish support for stability and territorial unity. In a message posted on X, Erdogan said the day marked the liberation of the Syrian people “after years of an oppressive regime, heavy costs, great suffering and numerous hardships.” He also offered prayers for those killed in attacks by the Assad regime and terrorist organizations.
Pledging Sustained Support
Erdogan expressed appreciation for the progress made by the Syrian people over the past year despite difficulties, sabotage attempts, and provocations. He stated that Turkey will continue to provide all necessary support to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and achieve social peace among all segments of society, adding that Ankara backs efforts to ensure Syria emerges as a “center of peace and stability” in the region. In the same context, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan congratulated the Syrian people on the occasion, honoring their 14-year struggle against tyranny.
Fidan commended the “commendable efforts” of the Syrian government as it enters a determined phase of national reconstruction following years of destruction. Expressing confidence in Syria’s future, he reaffirmed that Turkey will stand by Syria throughout its recovery and rebuilding process.
The ministry’s statement also acknowledged the significant challenges faced over the past year and commended the government’s pursuit of “a prudent and peaceful foreign policy” and its steps toward securing a respected international position. This reflects Ankara’s approval of the new administration’s direction under President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
Strategic Implications for Bilateral Relations
The statements reinforce the growing partnership between Syria and Turkey. They align with Turkey’s efforts to ensure a stable, secure, and friendly Syria along its border, facilitate the voluntary return of refugees, and promote regional economic integration.
Turkey played a key role in Syrian developments since the outbreak of the revolution against the Assad regime in 2011. It declared support for the uprising from the outset and aligned itself with the Syrian people.
Turkey also implemented a security project across northern Syrian cities, supporting the establishment of the Syrian National Army (SNA), providing military training, and assistance. Moreover, Turkey has been host to the world’s largest Syrian refugee population, offering protection, occupational opportunities and access to services such as education and healthcare.
