Syria and Aga Khan Network Partner to Strengthen Water Projects

The Syrian Ministry of Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) to enhance collaboration on water and sanitation projects. The agreement aims to improve water services while promoting sustainable resource management in several regions across Syria.

The signing ceremony took place at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus. Engineer Tahir al-Omar, Assistant Director General of the General Directorate of Water, signed on behalf of the Ministry of Energy. Dr. Muhannid Obeido, Executive Director of the Aga Khan Foundation Syria, signed for the AKDN. The event was attended by Engineer Osama Abu Zaid, Assistant Minister of Energy for Water Resources Affairs, and Mr. Ghaithan Ajjoub, the AKDN’s Resident Representative in Syria.

AKDN Commits Over €100 Million to Water Initiatives

Omar emphasized that the MoU aligns with the ministry’s broader strategy to develop water infrastructure, particularly in the city of Salamiyah and its countryside in Hama Governorate. Planned projects include the rehabilitation of water transmission lines, the construction of new pumping stations and reservoirs, and support for treatment facilities and renewable energy integration. These efforts are expected to positively impact the quality and sustainability of water services.

Obeido affirmed the Aga Khan Foundation is dedicated to supporting government and community efforts to improve water and sanitation services through sustainable infrastructure projects. Ajjoub highlighted the network’s commitment to providing safe drinking water across multiple areas. He noted that the AKDN’s projects in this sector will exceed €100 million during 2026 and 2027, contributing to sustainable development and strengthening local communities.

Strengthening Government Efforts and Expanding Access

The Ministry of Energy stated that cooperation with the AKDN supports government efforts improving water and sanitation services and expand access to safe drinking water, meeting the needs of local communities and reinforcing sustainable development.

The ministry noted that the projects implemented by the network in coordination with national entities have already helped hundreds of thousands of citizens gain access to safe drinking water since their launch in late 2024. Plans are underway to extend these benefits to additional communities.

A Legacy of Service and Stability

These initiatives are part of the AKDN’s ongoing efforts to provide clean and sustainable drinking water, following the directives of Prince Rahim Aga Khan V. With contributions exceeding €100 million for 2026 and 2027, the projects aim to support local communities across various Syrian governorates.

This partnership enhances service quality, alleviates living burdens, and strengthens the resilience of local communities, thereby supporting long-term stability and sustainable development. It is worth noting that the AKDN is actively involved in numerous service-oriented projects in Syria and provides humanitarian assistance to displaced persons, particularly those residing in camps.
