Turkey and Qatar have emerged as key allies of the Syrian Transitional Government (STG), committing to aid in the stabilization and reconstruction of the war-torn nation following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Both nations, steadfast supporters of the Syrian revolution, have reaffirmed their dedication to the Syrian people by providing humanitarian assistance, infrastructure development, and political support.

Commitment to Stability

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking in Ankara, highlighted Turkey’s long-standing support for the Syrian revolution and its unwavering commitment to helping Syria rebuild.

“On December 8, a new era began in Syria with the fall of Damascus, the escape of Assad, and the collapse of the Baath regime. Turkey and Qatar will support Syria’s efforts to heal its wounds and stand on its feet again,” Erdogan said.

Erdogan emphasized that Turkey’s cooperation with the STG administration, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, would include rebuilding critical infrastructure, maintaining regional stability, and addressing security challenges. “A stable Syria means a source of security for the entire region,” he said, stressing that Ankara would continue to prioritize the unity and territorial integrity of Syria.

Qatar’s Humanitarian & Economic Support

Qatar has also taken significant steps to support Syria’s recovery. Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, recently visited Damascus to meet with Syrian leaders, including al-Sharaa. During the visit, Al-Khulaifi pledged Qatar’s full support for Syria’s reconstruction and stability efforts. “This stage requires concerted efforts to rebuild what was destroyed by years of war and to build a future worthy of the aspirations of the Syrian people,” Al-Khulaifi said.

Qatar has announced plans to resume direct flights between Doha and Damascus, with Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines among the first carriers expected to operate. The Qatar Development Fund has also begun discussions to ensure the effective delivery of humanitarian aid and infrastructure development projects.

In addition, the Qatar Red Crescent has launched multiple initiatives to address Syria’s pressing humanitarian needs, including medical aid for kidney patients and food assistance for orphan families in northern Syria.

Coordinated Reconstruction Efforts

Both Turkey and Qatar are coordinating with Syria’s transitional government to reopen critical facilities, including Damascus International Airport. Turkish and Qatari technical teams have assessed the airport’s needs, promising rapid support to bring it up to international standards.

Ashhad Al-Salibi, Director of Coordination for Syrian Airports Affairs, acknowledged the challenges posed by years of neglect and sabotage under the Assad regime but expressed optimism about the progress. “We are working day and night to reopen the airport, and we are confident that international flights will resume soon,” he said.

A Shared Vision

Both nations share a vision of a stable and prosperous Syria. Erdogan emphasized the need for international cooperation, calling on Arab and Islamic nations to support Syria’s recovery. “Syrians expect and deserve this solidarity,” he said.

Qatar’s Majed Al-Ansari spoke on the need for a Syrian-led political process and international support to rebuild institutions and ensure stability. “Qatar has always stood with the Syrian people, and we will continue to do so as they work toward a brighter future,” he said.

Challenges Ahead

Despite these efforts, significant challenges remain, including overcoming the legacy of sanctions, rebuilding destroyed infrastructure, and maintaining security. Turkey and Qatar’s coordinated support provides a foundation for progress, but broader international cooperation will be essential for Syria’s long-term recovery. As Syria turns a page in its history, the dedication of allies like these will be pivotal in helping the country transition from conflict to peace and prosperity.
