The relations between Qatar and Syria underwent a radical transformation at the end of 2024, when the regime of Bashar al-Assad collapsed, and President Ahmad al-Sharaa took over leadership of the country during a critical transitional phase. This significant change marked the beginning of a new era in Syrian-Qatari relations under the transitional government, where bilateral relations are based on mutual trust and a sincere desire to achieve comprehensive stability that restores Syria’s position on both the Arab and international stages.

Syrian-Qatari Relations Under Sharaa

Qatar, has maintained its principled stance supporting the Syrian people since the very first moments of the revolution, not waiting long to back the new Syria politically, economically, and humanitarianly. In January 2025, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatari Emir, made an official visit to Damascus, becoming the first Arab leader to visit Syria after the fall of the Assad regime. The visit reflected direct and clear support for the new phase and served as a symbolic message affirming Qatar’s commitment to the Syrian people.

Return of Diplomacy Between Doha and Damascus

After a hiatus of over 13 years, Qatar reopened its embassy in Damascus. This step came as part of Qatar’s explicit support for Syria. In return, Damascus announced its intention to reactivate its embassy in Doha and expand consular and commercial relations to serve the common interests of both countries.

In mid-April 2025, Syrian President Sharaa traveled to Doha on an official visit, at the invitation of the Qatari leader. The visit represented the culmination of a path of openness and cooperation between the nations.

Towards Economic and Investment Integration in the Future

Economic relations between the two countries are witnessing rapid growth, with many Qatari businessmen ready to enter the Syrian market. Joint investment projects are being proposed in areas such as construction, agriculture, and telecommunications technology.

During official meetings on June 3 in the Qatari capital, Doha, Syrian and Qatari ministers discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation and opportunities for joint investment between the two countries in various fields.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Minister of Economy and Industry Muhammad al-Shaar and Minister of Communications and Technology Abdulsalam Heikal met with Qatari Minister of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal al-Thani, where they discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation and expand investment areas between Syria and Qatar.

In a separate meeting, Syrian Finance Minister Muhammad Barniya sat with his Qatari counterpart Ali bin Ahmad al-Kuwari, where both sides discussed mechanisms for developing financial and economic cooperation and coordinating efforts in areas of mutual interest.

Qatar continues its support by emphasizing openness to cooperation with Syria during the upcoming period, which is expected to witness significant momentum in Qatari-Syrian projects and a new beginning for collaboration.
