Relations between Syria and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (HKJ) have entered a new phase of economic cooperation. The Syrian and Jordanian governments have agreed to establish a higher coordinating council to enhance joint efforts, marking a significant turning point in the relationship between Damascus and Amman.
A Historic Visit
On May 20, 2025, Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, visited Damascus, leading a high-level Jordanian ministerial delegation. In a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani with his Jordanian counterpart at the conclusion of their discussions in Damascus, he stated, “We signed an agreement to establish a higher coordinating council to enhance joint work that serves the interests of our two countries.”
This council will serve as a strategic umbrella for developing cooperation, allowing both countries to make quick decisions on key issues. It also opens new opportunities for effective partnerships in vital sectors such as trade, water, transport, and energy, paving the way for a more stable and sustainable economic future.
A high-level Jordanian economic delegation visited Syria May 28, including heads of chambers of commerce and representatives from various service and industrial sectors. The delegation held meetings with government officials, business leaders, and Syrian chambers of commerce, reflecting a trend toward activating joint economic cooperation and enhancing regional stability through development and investment.
Damascus witnessed a tangible start to this new phase during a joint meeting held by the Syrian Chambers of Commerce Federation and the Jordan Chamber of Commerce. The meeting concluded with an agreement to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for future cooperation covering investment, trade exchange, industry, agriculture, transport, banking, and food industries.
Both sides agreed to establish a Syrian-Jordanian Business Council and form sectoral committees to address obstacles to economic collaboration and propose practical solutions. They also agreed to initiate a twinning process between the chambers of commerce in both countries and set up a coordinating office to activate follow-up mechanisms.
Additionally, Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Basel Abdulhanan met with Khalil al-Haj Tawfiq, president of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, agreed to discuss enhancing cooperation in industrial and commercial fields and stimulating bilateral investments. They emphasized the need to transition to a free economy that can integrate into international markets while achieving a more efficient and open business environment.
In the same context, Syrian Transport Minister Dr. Yarub Badr met in Damascus with a Jordanian industrial delegation led by Engineer Fathi al-Jughbir, president of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry. They discussed developing cooperation in the transport sector and facilitating the passage of Jordanian exports through Syrian territory.
These joint initiatives reflect a mutual desire to reshape economic relations on solid foundations that align with regional changes, establishing a more organized and comprehensive cooperation phase based on shared interests and openness to future opportunities.
