Government and SAMS Open Hematology and Oncology Center in Daraa

The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has inaugurated the first free specialized center for the treatment of blood diseases and cancer in Daraa Governorate. This initiative comes as part of the Abshiri Horan campaign aiming to serve cancer patients and alleviate their financial and emotional burdens.

The new center is located in the Qusour neighborhood near the Panorama Square in Daraa City, and is the first of its kind in the southern region, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to receive specialized treatment.

Expanding Coverage to Remote Areas

Health Minister Dr. Musab al-Ali confirmed that the opening of this center in partnership with SAMS is part of the ministry’s efforts to ease the burdens of cancer patients and their families. He noted that previously, treatment services were limited to only two governorates, while centers have now been opened in Deir Ezzor and Hama, in addition to the new center in Daraa, adding to the five existing centers in northern Syria.

Ali described the opening of the center as a historic step, affirming the ministry’s support for this center and others, and expanding its services to include as many patients as possible, with a focus on remote governorates. Ali also revealed plans to launch a campaign for early breast cancer detection soon across all Syrian governorates.

Fruits of the Abshiri Horan Campaign

For his part, Daraa Governor Anwar al-Zoubi described the opening of the center as a blessed step supporting cancer patients, expressing the governorate’s readiness to provide necessary support to the center.

He explained the new center is possible due to the Abshiri Horan campaign, through which Daraa and SAMS cooperate in supporting the health sector. The center was fully equipped by SAMS to ensure free services for patients.

Dr. Basel Atassi, head of the Blood Diseases and Oncology Committee at SAMS, stated that the center supports investigations related to tumors and provides diagnostic and follow-up services as well as administering free medication and procedures in special rooms under full medical supervision.

SAMS work coordinator, Sawsan al-Rashdan, stated the center provides medical consultations and free treatment services, distributing medications for certain types of cancers. She indicated that there are plans to expand services to include additional types of cancer treatment, as well as offering free infusion sessions for patients not covered by treatment in Daraa.

This initiative is part of the Ministry of Health’s plan to develop the health sector, enhance sustainable development efforts, and meet citizens’ needs in various regions of Syria The center aims to treat cancer patients and alleviate their suffering by providing necessary medical services such as clinical examinations, administering doses, and providing medication.
