Energy Ministry Signs Deals to Build 5,000 MW Power Plants

The Ministry of Energy has signed final agreements with a consortium of international companies led by the Qatari firm UrbaCon Holding (UCC) to construct four new power plants with a combined capacity of 5,000 megawatts. The plants will operate on both natural gas and solar energy, marking one of the most significant strategic energy initiatives undertaken in Syria since 2011.

The Ministry described the project as a cornerstone of its efforts to revitalize the country’s energy infrastructure and transition toward a more sustainable and efficient power model. Officials said the initiative will have far-reaching implications for the national economy and regional energy cooperation, laying the groundwork for a stable and environmentally conscious future.

Strategic Projects Across Key Regions

The new power stations will be located in northern Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, the Damascus countryside, and the central region. Complementing these projects are several solar energy facilities totaling 1,000 megawatts in capacity, to be distributed across multiple sites nationwide.

These projects form a central component of the Ministry’s broader plan to modernize the national grid, improve operational efficiency, and ensure reliable electricity supply for citizens and industries alike.

A Qualitative Leap for Energy Infrastructure

Following the signing ceremony, Minister of Energy Muhammad al-Bashir described the initiative as a “qualitative leap” for Syria’s energy infrastructure. “This project enhances national energy security, supports the stability of the electrical grid, and paves the way for further international investment in sustainable development,” al-Bashir said.

He explained that the Ministry is working under “an integrated vision to rebuild the energy sector on scientific and economic foundations,” with a balance between efficiency and environmental sustainability that “will positively reflect on the national economy and the daily lives of citizens.”

Creating Jobs and Driving Local Growth

In a statement posted on his X account, the minister added that the contracts with UCC build upon previous memoranda and will be carried out in multiple phases according to a detailed schedule over the next three and a half years.

“These projects will provide more than 50,000 direct and 200,000 indirect job opportunities,” he said, emphasizing their contribution to the national economy and local development. The agreements mark a decisive step in Syria’s post-conflict reconstruction and its long-term strategy to diversify energy sources, attract foreign investment, and secure sustainable growth for the decades ahead.
