In a step reflecting growing academic openness and international educational cooperation, the Syrian Engineers Syndicate inaugurated a Syrian branch of the US-based Columbia College, aiming to provide globally accredited education and training opportunities for Syrian students and professionals.
Investing in Human Capital via Global Curriculum
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Transport Yarub Badr highlighted the importance of high-quality education, practical training, and digital learning platforms in equipping young people with the skills required for today’s labor market. He emphasized that sustained investment in education and human capital forms the foundation of long-term development and economic recovery.
The Vice President of Columbia College explained that the institution’s vision is rooted in educational freedom and meeting the growing demand among Syrian youth for internationally competitive curricula. He affirmed the college’s readiness to deliver its academic programs in Syria, noting that the partnership with the Syrian Engineers Syndicate provides an effective framework to expand access to high-quality education.
Enhancing Engineering and Professional Qualifications
The Syrian Engineers Syndicate confirmed that this initiative represents a practical step toward upgrading the skills of engineers in language proficiency, engineering disciplines, and management. The programs are designed to align local expertise with global standards and support Syria’s reconstruction needs, with participants receiving internationally accredited certificates.
The Syndicate also announced the launch of a specialized training center operating in cooperation with an American university branch, offering online training programs. Since the beginning of the year, the Syndicate has signed multiple agreements with national and international partners to strengthen the engineering profession and raise professional competencies.
Supporting Syria’s Education Sector
The Director of International Relations at Columbia College emphasized that opening a branch in Syria provides students with direct access to US-accredited curricula and modern academic programs across various fields. This initiative supports the development of the local education system and reduces barriers for students seeking internationally recognized qualifications.
Educational offerings will include English language training and preparation for international exams such as TOEFL, with plans to allow students to sit for these tests inside Syria. This approach is expected to reduce financial and logistical burdens while expanding educational opportunities.
A Strategic Academic Partnership
Columbia College, accredited in the US state of Virginia, offers certificate and associate degree programs in disciplines such as Business Administration and Computer Science, with a strong emphasis on practical learning.
The establishment of its Syrian branch represents a strategic step toward strengthening academic partnerships, enhancing professional qualifications, and aligning Syria’s education and engineering sectors with leading international standards in support of reconstruction and sustainable development.
