The 62nd Damascus International Fair (DIF) opened this week under the patronage of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, marking the first edition of the event in five years and signaling a renewed effort to restore Syria’s role as a hub for trade and investment.

Syria’s Historic Role Revived

In his opening remarks, Sharaa said the fair underscores Syria’s return to its “historical economic role as a strategic trade center on the caravan route between East and West.” He outlined government priorities for the coming phase, including economic growth, increased production, wage improvements, and the return of displaced persons.

Symbol of Recovery and Openness

Muhammad Hamza, director general of the General Organization for Fairs and International Markets, described the event as a turning point. “This is the first edition after the fall of the former regime and lays the foundation for a new phase of openness to the world, partnership, and hope,” Hamza told Levant 24. He said the event represents the resumption of normal economic life after years of conflict.

International Scale and Regional Cooperation

The fair spans 95,000 square meters and features more than 800 companies from 20 countries. Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and Algeria joined international participants from Europe, Asia, and Africa, including Belgium, Poland, Indonesia, and South Africa.

Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat called Syria a “vital partner,” saying Ankara would support the country’s reconstruction. Turkish companies exhibited across 1,000 square meters, with more than 500 businessmen present.

Saudi Arabia also showcased a significant presence under the slogan “We Are Similar.” The kingdom’s deputy minister of investment said Saudi investments in Syria have exceeded 24 billion riyals and confirmed plans for new projects in energy and infrastructure.

A Stage for Future Engagement

The return of the Damascus International Fair is being portrayed by officials as more than an economic gathering. To many, it is a signal that Syria is seeking deeper regional and international partnerships after a decade of instability.
