The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is a nonprofit organization that has been actively involved in providing medical assistance and humanitarian support in Syria.
SAMS has conducted campaigns and programs in Syria since 2011, with most recent campaigns launched this summer. It aims to help save and strengthen Syria’s collapsing healthcare system by delivering life-saving care, equipping facilities, and rebuilding infrastructure.
SAMS, in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Health, launched a volunteer medical campaign, including 14 medical and surgical specialties, targeting the governorates of Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Idlib, Daraa, Homs, and the Damascus Countryside.
Head of SAMS’s oncology committee Basil al-Atassi noted that the campaign, in which 37 volunteers are participating in its first week, includes free surgeries, particularly in the fields of reconstructive surgery for patients with resected tumors, cardiac catheterization, for children and adults, and advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Atassi indicated that the campaign will include the opening of free medical clinics for citizens in the targeted areas, in addition to holding scientific seminars, lectures, and practical training for doctors and healthcare workers in various governorates, particularly Homs and Hama, in cooperation with the health directorates and doctors’ unions in Aleppo, Damascus, Hama, and Homs.
According to the oncologist the second week will witness the launch of a dental campaign with the participation of approximately ten specialists providing free treatment and awareness services. Atassi emphasized that the campaign represents a model of humanitarian and scientific work by combining the provision of free healthcare services, the transfer of medical expertise, and the development of skills through education and training.
SAMS medical missions continue their activities in various Syrian governorates, carrying with them the hope of curing all Syrian patients.
