The city of Rastan in the Homs countryside witnessed an extraordinary display of solidarity during the “Rastan Wednesday” campaign, which raised a total of $3,815,000 in donations. The initiative, organized by the Rastan Development Forum in cooperation with local civil society organizations, brought together 900 donors in a collective effort to support reconstruction and development in the city.
Organizers described the campaign as a powerful reflection of the community’s unity and determination to rebuild after years of hardship, calling it a model of social responsibility and shared purpose.
A Gesture of Sacrifice and Remembrance
One of the most touching moments of the campaign came when the daughter of Lieutenant Ahmad Khalaf, who was martyred in September 2011 while defending Rastan, sold her father’s military uniform for $15,000 to support the initiative.
Lieutenant Khalaf was known for his words, “If the tanks enter Rastan, know that I am a martyr.” The sale of his uniform, a deeply symbolic act, underscored the spirit of sacrifice and generosity that defined the campaign. The proceeds will go toward rebuilding his hometown, continuing the legacy of his dedication to the city’s people.
Development Projects to Benefit Local Communities
According to Ahmad Saaduddin, head of the forum’s finance committee, the funds raised will be used to restore five schools in the campaign’s first phase, along with repairing damaged roads and infrastructure.
Ibrahim Muhammad Mardoud, director of the Rastan district, said the initiative marks a major step in revitalizing essential services across education, health, and infrastructure, emphasizing that such projects directly improve citizens’ daily lives.
Partnerships Strengthen the Path to Reconstruction
The campaign drew significant official and popular participation, including representatives from local authorities. The Governor of Homs and the Director of Political Affairs commended the effort, noting its importance in supporting reconstruction and sustainable development.
The White Hands Association contributed $250,000, demonstrating the role of charitable organizations in national recovery. Meanwhile, Abdulrazzaq Tlass, one of the first officers to defect from the former regime, stressed that rebuilding and development are patriotic responsibilities shared by all Syrians.
A Model for National Renewal
The “Rastan Wednesday” campaign stands as an inspiring example of community-led reconstruction, proving that unity and cooperation remain the strongest foundations for rebuilding Syria’s cities. Through shared commitment and collective action, Rastan’s residents have demonstrated how local initiative can drive meaningful change and hope for the future.
