‘Committed to Peace and International Cooperation’ Syria at UN Tourism

Syria participated in the 26th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the attendance of 160 delegations from member states, including ministers, senior officials, and leaders from various global sectors and organizations.

In his address during the session, Minister of Tourism Mazen al-Salehani affirmed Syria’s commitment to peace and international cooperation, emphasizing the country’s determination to reopen to the world through sustainable tourism.

“Our message from Damascus to the world is that tourism is not just a journey to discover places, but to discover the humanity within us. Syria extends its hand once again to build bridges of love and peace with all peoples,” Salehani said.

The minister expressed Syria’s gratitude to the countries that supported the Syrian people during their ordeal, stating that “true humanity and brotherhood are measured by actions, not words.”

Developing Tourism Cooperation between Syria and Saudi Arabia

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Salehani held discussions with Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmad al-Khateeb on ways to develop and strengthen tourism cooperation between the two countries. The talks focused on supporting investment projects, exchanging expertise in destination management, and implementing joint tourism marketing initiatives. Both sides emphasized the importance of facilitating procedures to help restore Syria’s tourism sector to its place on the regional and international tourism map.

Minister Khateeb praised the historical and cultural importance of Syrian tourism, expressing his hope for its revival and the expansion of cooperation between Syria and Saudi Arabia in the coming period. In related meetings, Salehani discussed opportunities for cooperation in tourism investment and events with Nassir al-Khalawi, Head of the National Committee for Hospitality and Tourism, and with Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid al-Falih.

Strengthening Tourism Between Syria and Jordan

During his meeting with Jordanian Minister of Tourism Imad al-Hijazin, Salehani addressed the importance of linking tourism routes between Syria and Jordan and enhancing joint mechanisms to facilitate movement and attract visitors to both countries. The discussions focused on cooperation to promote regional tourism and improve coordination between the two ministries.

The UNGA Tourism brings together all member states of the organization to oversee its policies and ensure the achievement of its vision for sustainable global tourism development. Syria’s participation in this international event represents a strategic opportunity to highlight the country’s tourism potential and to enhance cooperation with global partners. It reflects Syria’s desire to open up to the world, promote peace, and attract investors to develop the tourism sector, which plays a vital role in improving infrastructure and creating new job opportunities.
