According to Reuters Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa is expected to lead a Syrian delegation to the upcoming G7 summit in France next month, in what would mark Syria’s first participation in the forum since its establishment in 1975.

Reuters that Sharaa received an invitation to attend the summit scheduled for June 15-17 in Evian-lies-Bains in southeastern France. One source told the agency that French officials hand-delivered the invitation to Syrian Finance Minister Muhammad Barnieh during G7 financial meetings held earlier this week in Paris.

The reported invitation reflects growing international engagement with Damascus following recent European efforts to reopen economic channels with Syria following years of diplomatic isolation and sanctions. Both Syria and Ukraine are expected to participate in parts of the summit discussions, highlighting the G7’s interest in countries considered important to regional and global stability.

Finance Meetings Opened the Door

The expected summit appearance follows Syria’s participation in a closed session involving G7 finance ministers and central bank governors in Paris earlier this month. Reuters previously reported the discussions focused on Syria’s sustainable economic recovery and its possible reintegration into the global financial system. The meetings also addressed broader international concerns, including global trade tensions, supply chain disruptions and the economic fallout from conflicts in the Middle East.

Reuters said Damascus plans to present itself as a potential strategic hub for regional supply chains, particularly following disruptions tied to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and instability affecting key transport corridors. The ministry also described the French invitation to Syria’s finance delegation as evidence of growing international interest in Syria’s reconstruction and economic stabilization.

During the Paris meetings, Finance Minister Barnieh outlined ongoing financial reforms and economic challenges facing Syria, according to statements published by the Syrian Ministry of Finance on Telegram. The ministry said Damascus seeks deeper integration into global financial systems aiming to create conditions encouraging investment and sustainable development.

Europe Expands Economic Engagement

The anticipated G7 summit participation comes amid broader European moves to gradually restore economic ties with Syria. In recent months, European officials signaled a willingness to reconsider some sanctions measures and expand technical and developmental cooperation linked to reconstruction efforts.

On May 11, the EU announced support packages aimed at improving basic services and supporting recovery projects inside Syria. European governments have increasingly framed economic engagement as part of wider regional stabilization efforts.

The Group of Seven includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain and the US. The summit is expected to draw several world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

While French and Syrian officials have not formally confirmed Sharaa’s attendance, the reported invitation marks another step in Damascus’ gradual return to international political and economic forums after years of limited engagement with Western powers.
