China interference in Syria, will it grow with U.S. withdrawal from the region?

According to the Breaking Defense website, taking advantage of America’s intention to withdraw from Northeast Syria, China is working to establish a foothold in the country.

China’s ambitions in Syria have sparked widespread controversy and fear among Western and Israeli politicians and experts.

Beijing has been supporting Russia in all its decisions aimed at protecting and keeping the Assad regime in power. As its greed for Syria comes as part of its efforts to enhance its influence in the Arab Gulf region.

China has been supportive of the regime in its war on the Syrian revolution, as it provided it with significant diplomatic support in the UN Security Council, leading to the closure of humanitarian crossings between the liberated areas and Turkey.

While traveling through the Middle East over the past week, the head of U.S. Central Command, Gen. Frank McKenzie said that the Middle East is an area of intense competition between the great powers. “I think that as we adjust our posture in the region, China and Russia will be looking very closely to see if a vacuum opens that they can exploit,” McKenzie told reporters traveling with him.

Since President Joe Biden took office, he has ordered the full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan and began to review America’s force presence in Syria, Iraq, and around the globe, which according to some analysts will lead to China establishing a foothold in these countries. In an interview with CNN, the Syrian National Coalition representative to the U.S., Qutaiba Idlibi said that if the American government cares about great power competition with China and Russia then Syria is the place where we the U.S. is being challenged.
