Two senior officers from the Assad regime’s military were killed in a drone attack on Thursday at the Kuweires Military Airport in the eastern countryside of Aleppo. The identities of the attackers remain unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility for the strike.
Local news outlets reported the deaths of Colonel Pilot Haitham Arif Deeb from the Latakia Governorate and Pilot Lieutenant Colonel Nizar Bahjat Al-Khair from the Tartous Governorate. The Kuweires Military Airport has been a significant target due to its strategic importance. The recent attack adds to the escalating violence in the region, particularly in the southern and eastern Idlib countryside, where daily clashes and drone attacks have intensified.
In the days leading up to the Kuweires attack, the Assad regime forces launched several drone assaults on villages and towns in Idlib. On Wednesday, explosive first-person view (FPV) drones targeted four villages, causing significant damage to infrastructure and civilian property. These attacks are part of a broader escalation that has gripped the region in recent weeks.
Last Sunday, a massive drone strike involving 13 bomb-laden drones targeted the villages of Al-Nairab, Qaminas, and Sarmin in eastern Idlib. The assault resulted in the destruction of a bread distribution vehicle, a van, a Suzuki car, and engineering machinery used for drilling wells.
Prior to this, regime forces attacked with 17 suicide drones, damaging seven civilian vehicles, including four small private cars, a truck, a passenger car, and an engineering bulldozer in the villages of Maarzaf, Al-Mantaf, and Al-Bureij in southern Idlib.
The attack on Kuweires Military Airport reflects the broader conflict and instability plaguing Syria. The Assad regime’s use of explosive FPV drones has led to significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage in Idlib, a region that remains one of the last strongholds of revolutionary forces.
