Colonel Riad al-Asaad, one of the founding leaders of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), made a high-profile visit to Idlib this week to attend the 3rd annual Book Fair and tour some of the institutions of the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG).
Following Col. Asaad’s visit and participation in the ongoing Idlib Book Fair, he has taken the opportunity to visit some of the ministries of the SSG, beginning with the Ministry of Interior. Asaad was received by the Minister of Interior, Muhammad Abdurahman, at the Ministry, where they discussed the achievements in safeguarding the liberated areas. During the meeting, Abdurahman presented an overview of the ministry’s efforts to protect civilians in regions controlled by the SSG, which governs much of opposition-held northwestern Syria.
Accompanied by a delegation, Asaad toured the region’s first Police College, and its various departments, including its theoretical and practical training halls, the Director of the Police College, and the training staff. He expressed his appreciation for their efforts in building the capacity of security forces in liberated areas congratulating the graduation of their first class while praising their achievements in establishing a competent law enforcement body in revolutionary-controlled Syria.
The visit included a session with the Director of the Police College and its officers, where they discussed the college’s educational curriculum and training program. Asaad emphasized the importance of robust training and education for the officers tasked with protecting liberated regions from regime forces and other threats.
Asaad’s tour demonstrated his ongoing role as an influential figure within Syrian revolutionary spheres. His return to Idlib highlights the evolving dynamics in Syria’s liberated territories, where the SSG has emerged as a key governing body.
Known for his defection from the Assad regime and the establishment of the FSA in 2011, Asaad remains a prominent figure among many Syrians. During his visit, he reviewed the progress made by the SSG, while also emphasizing the need for continued cooperation in the fight against the Assad regime.
