Car Bomb Kills Three Police Officers in Mayadin Blast

A car bomb exploded near the main police station in Mayadin on Sunday evening, killing three members of the Interior Ministry’s security personnel and injuring several others, according to reports by Syrian officials.

Deadly Explosion Rocks Eastern Deir Ezzor City

The blast occurred at precisely 7:13 p.m. on May 18, as confirmed by Mayadin District Director Khalil Abdulmoneim al-Ayoub. Speaking in a statement released via the Deir Ezzor Governorate’s official Telegram channel, Ayoub said the explosion caused a powerful shockwave that was felt across the city.

Initial investigations and site inspections confirmed that the explosion was caused by a car bomb,” Ayoub stated. “This act of terror led to the martyrdom of three and left a number of others injured.”

Authorities responded quickly, deploying police and security forces to cordon off the area and begin a formal investigation. Ayoub said efforts are underway to identify those responsible for what he described as a “cowardly” attack, vowing that “the treacherous hand will not escape punishment.”

City Imposes Curfew Amid Heightened Tensions

In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, local media reported that a curfew was enforced across Mayadin as a precautionary measure. The police station targeted in the attack is located in a central area of the city, which lies east of Deir Ezzor and has seen intermittent unrest in recent years.

The General Security Administration (GSA) has been actively conducting security campaigns in Deir Ezzor Governorate to locate remnants of the former Assad regime and ISIS-affiliated cells. One such campaign, carried out on February 2 and 3, led to the arrest of 35 former regime elements who had reportedly refused to join the national reconciliation process.

Continuing Instability in Deir Ezzor Region

The attack underscores the fragile security situation in parts of eastern Syria, where military operations and intelligence efforts remain ongoing. Although large-scale battles have subsided, sporadic violence continues to claim lives, particularly in areas targeted by both insurgent groups and counterinsurgency operations.

While no group has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s bombing, officials believe it is linked to attempts to destabilize the security structure in a region still recovering from years of conflict.

We assure our people in Mayadin that we remain alert and committed to protecting the nation and its citizens,” Ayyoub said in closing.

As investigations continue, the area surrounding the police station remains sealed off, with security presence significantly increased across the district.
