UN and Syria Partner in Opening and Rehabilitating Bakeries

The Syrian Bakeries Corporation, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Food Program (WFP), has begun implementing a project to rehabilitate and restore several damaged bakeries in various governorates, as well as to establish new bakeries in areas suffering from inadequate food supply services.

The project aims to improve the quality of bread and increase production quantities, thereby contributing to enhancing food security and meeting citizens’ needs. This is achieved by targeting areas serving over 550,000 people across several provinces and improving the efficiency of bakeries and enhancing their infrastructure to ensure bread production according to the best technical and professional standards.

Muhammad al-Sayyadi, General Director of the Syrian Bakeries Corporation, explained this collaboration with UN agencies is part of efforts to compensate for the production shortages caused by the closure of several bakeries due to either destruction or technical deterioration.

He noted the project focuses on enhancing operational efficiency and technical safety of the bakeries to ensure continuity of operations and achieve higher quality in bread production. The Bread Corporation looks forward to expanding cooperation with international organizations to implement similar projects, which would contribute to improving the operational reality of bakeries and achieving supply stability in various regions.

In a step reflecting the efforts of the Syrian government to improve living conditions, the Directorate of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection opened the Martyrs of Kafr Nabl bakery in the center of the city in southern Idlib on September 13, aiming to provide bread for the residents returning to the city and neighboring villages.

In June, the Ministry of Economy and Trade announced the commencement of a partnership agreement with the World Food Program (WFP) to secure necessary support for bread supplies in six Syrian provinces by supporting 64 bakeries with quantities of subsidized flour, providing up to 45,000 tons of flour until the end of 2025.
