Kuwait Plans Embassy Reopening, Announces Support for Syria Recovery Efforts

Kuwait reaffirmed that stability in Syria remains essential to strengthening regional and international peace and security. The Gulf state also renewed its support for Syria’s recovery and reconstruction efforts while announcing plans to reopen its embassy in Damascus.

The announcement came during remarks by Kuwait’s ambassador to Belgium and head of its missions to the EU and NATO, Nawaf al-Enezi. He spoke at the first high-level political dialogue between the EU and Syria, held in Brussels.

Kuwait also praised the European Commission for organizing the Partnership Coordination Forum on Syria. According to Enezi, the forum reflects growing international support for Damascus at a critical stage in the country’s modern history while highlighting efforts to advance recovery and reconstruction.

European Cooperation and Regional Concerns

During his speech, Enezi commended the EU’s current engagement with Syria stressing the importance of sustained international momentum to reinforce stability and reduce the impact of regional crises. He warned that any setback in Syria’s path toward stability could extend beyond its borders and affect neighboring countries as well as the wider region.

Addressing Syria’s political, security and economic challenges, he says, remains a shared international responsibility. Enezi also reaffirmed Kuwait’s opposition to foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs. He said Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain fundamental principles that should not be compromised in any future political process.

In addition, the Kuwaiti envoy condemned repeated Israeli strikes on Syrian territory, describing them as violations of international law and the UN Charter. He also criticized the continued occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights.

Expanding Ties With Damascus

Enezi highlighted Kuwait’s longstanding support for the Syrian people, noting Kuwait hosted three donor conferences and co-chaired, alongside the EU, the “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region” conference. He said those efforts reflect Kuwait’s commitment to regional stability and humanitarian support.

As part of engagement efforts, Enezi announced Kuwait’s intention to reopen its embassy in Damascus. He emphasized the importance of bilateral relations and Syria’s role within its Arab and regional environment.

He also noted that the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development financed infrastructure and development projects in Syria in recent years. According to Enezi, those projects support local communities and contributed to improving living conditions.

At the same time, he pointed to increasing interest from Kuwait’s private sector in Syria’s economy. He recalled that a delegation of Kuwaiti businessmen and investors visited Damascus in May 2025 and met Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to discuss cooperation opportunities across several sectors.

Enezi concluded by expressing hope that the Brussels forum would provide a practical platform to support the Syrian people and advance the country’s recovery and stabilization efforts in the coming years.
