
In a meeting signaling a potential new chapter for Syria’s technology sector, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdulsalam Haikal met with the Japanese Chargé d’Affaires and Special Coordinator for Syria, Akihiro Tsuji. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in telecommunications and information technology, with the goal of developing infrastructure and fostering a modern digital business environment in Syria.
Haikal outlined key projects aimed at modernizing communication networks and improving internet service quality, stressing that the communications sector is a fundamental driver of economic development. He highlighted national initiatives supporting digital transformation and strengthening Syria’s regional standing in electronic services.
For his part, Tsuji affirmed Japan’s readiness to contribute through its companies specializing in modern technologies. He described 2025 as the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations based on developmental partnership and support for stability, marking a shift toward structured and long-term cooperation.
The two sides discussed opportunities for collaboration in several areas, including the development of digital financial services, strengthening the legislative environment supporting technological innovation, and enhancing cybersecurity to ensure the safety of electronic financial transactions. Both officials emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise in innovation, entrepreneurship, and empowering startups, recognizing their essential role in advancing a modern digital economy.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue coordination and establish joint programs promoting digital transformation. Both parties expressed their commitment to creating a secure, investment-friendly regulatory environment for Syria’s communications and technology sector.
