The Syrian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has completed the country’s first voice call using Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE), a 4G wireless broadband technology providing high-speed data for mobile devices. This marks a step forward in efforts to modernize Syria’s telecommunications sector. The live trial was conducted by Communications Minister Abdulsalam Haykal as part of initiatives strengthening Syria’s digital infrastructure.
Infrastructure Challenges Shape Strategy
Speaking after the test, Haykal said outdated infrastructure remains the sector’s biggest obstacle and the ministry’s top priority. He noted that local engineers and technical teams have managed to maintain basic service levels under difficult conditions, allowing gradual progress toward more advanced capabilities. Haykal also said the ministry is in the final stages of forming a joint company with Saudi Telecom Company to develop the SilkLink project.
At the same time, officials finalized operational frameworks and contracts for Barq Net, aiming to expand fiber-optic connections to homes and businesses through private investment. In parallel, several companies are reviewing terms to invest in a new mobile operator that would replace one of the current providers, in line with previously announced timelines.
VoLTE Signals Transition to Modern Networks
Bashir Arqsoosi of MTN Syria said VoLTE brings more than technical improvements. He described it as a step toward phasing out older network technologies and adopting more efficient systems. He added better service quality could help build user confidence and satisfaction.
Arqsoosi said public demand for stable and advanced communication services continues to push operators to invest in upgrades. He pointed to the role of local expertise in maintaining and developing networks despite ongoing constraints.
ICT Investment Linked to Broader Growth
Jack Ma, representing Huawei in Syria, emphasized that strong information and communications technology infrastructure supports economic and social development. He said the company’s continued presence reflects confidence in the local market and ongoing cooperation with Syrian partners. Ma added Huawei plans to maintain its investment and expand collaboration, expressing optimism about the sector’s long-term trajectory.
Improved Call Quality and Global Context
VoLTE technology allows faster call connections, clearer audio and the ability to use mobile data during voice calls without interruption. These features are expected to improve everyday communication and support more reliable service.
Globally, VoLTE has become a core component of modern mobile networks playing a role in the transition to standalone 5G systems. Industry data shows deployment across hundreds of networks and billions of connections, alongside continued expansion of 5G infrastructure by operators worldwide.
Syria’s first VoLTE call reflects these broader trends, while highlighting the country’s ongoing efforts rebuilding and upgrading its telecommunications capabilities.
