Berlin Talks Highlight Syrian Diaspora’s Role

Berlin hosted a conference titled Building Bridges for a Better Future for Syria, organized by the New Beginning for Syria platform under Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The event brought together Syria’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Hind Qabwat, and Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Reem Alabali-Radovan, along with members of the Syrian community and representatives of German institutions involved in reconstruction efforts.

The gathering focused on how Syrians abroad can support the country’s recovery and contribute to long-term development. Participants discussed ways to strengthen ties between expatriates and those inside Syria while exploring practical steps for cooperation.

Diaspora Seen as a National Asset

In her remarks, Qabwat described Syrians abroad as a “genuine wealth” for their country. She pointed to the knowledge and experience many have gained during years of displacement, as well as their continued connection to their homeland. She said engaging the diaspora is essential at this stage and called for stronger collaboration helping to shape future solutions.

Qabwat also noted discussions at the conference highlighted a wide range of expertise among Syrians overseas. She said these skills could support key areas such as research, technology and capacity building. At the same time, she emphasized the importance of dialogue between Syrians inside and outside the country to develop a shared vision for the future.

Building Bridges Through Dialogue

Hannes Lamprecht, director of the New Beginning for Syria platform, said the initiative was created after the fall of the former regime to connect Syrians in Germany with those in Syria and with German institutions. He described the annual conference as a space for open dialogue on reconstruction and cooperation.

Lamprecht said the presence of both ministers added depth to the discussions and underscored the importance of partnerships between governments and communities. He noted that such exchanges can help align priorities and improve coordination in reconstruction efforts.

Leveraging Skills for Reconstruction

Ghayath Bilal, vice president of the Syrian-German Business Council, said Syria’s large diaspora sets it apart from many other post-conflict countries. He pointed to the significant number of Syrians in Germany, across Europe, in the US and Gulf countries, many of whom have developed valuable professional skills.

Bilal said these experiences could play a key role in rebuilding and modernizing Syria. He added events like the Berlin conference help open channels for cooperation and encourage greater involvement from Syrians abroad.

As discussions continue, participants stressed the need to integrate diaspora expertise into development frameworks. They said a participatory approach could support a more sustainable reconstruction process reflecting the aspirations of Syrians both at home and abroad.
