The Syrian Scientific Pharmaceutical Forum opened at the National Library in Damascus under the slogan “We Meet to Innovate and Research to Advance.” Organized by the Syndicate of Pharmacists of Syria, the event brought together over 3,200 pharmacists and 30 lecturers from Syria and several countries.
Participants discussed recent developments in pharmaceutical science and industry, while the forum aimed to highlight new research, address sector challenges and support the academic and professional growth of students and graduates. Organizers described the gathering as a platform encouraging scientific research and promote innovation in the pharmaceutical field.
Bridging Education and Professional Practice
Minister of Higher Education Marwan all-Halabi stressed the importance of aligning academic research with the needs of society and the pharmaceutical sector. He said the ministry is working on two parallel tracks to improve pharmaceutical education.
The first focuses on updating curricula and training programs to reflect global developments. The second centers on supporting applied research while strengthening partnerships between universities, professional associations and the national pharmaceutical industry. Halabi said closer coordination between these sectors is essential to ensure that graduates are prepared for evolving professional demands.
Responding to Rapid Scientific Advances
Dr. Ibrahim al-Ismail, president of the Syndicate of Pharmacists of Syria, described the forum as a sign of progress following a period of disruption. He said the event reflects a commitment to advancing the profession despite ongoing challenges.
Ismail noted pharmacists have played a key role in maintaining access to medicines and providing consultations under difficult conditions. He also emphasized the need to keep pace with developments in biotechnology, clinical pharmacy and the growing use of artificial intelligence in pharmaceutical research and production.
Artificial Intelligence Gains Attention
Discussions at the forum included the integration of artificial intelligence into clinical pharmacy and scientific research. Dr. Firas Hanandeh, director of the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation Center at the Union of Arab Universities, highlighted the potential of AI systems to support data analysis and improve treatment outcomes.
He pointed to the role of advanced technologies in strengthening pharmaceutical and food industries, noting recent progress in these sectors. Participants discussed how digital tools can contribute to more efficient research and better healthcare delivery.
Exhibition Showcases Industry Developments
An accompanying exhibition featured more than 40 local and international companies presenting new products and technologies. Displays included medicines, medical and cosmetic preparations, as well as innovations in manufacturing and packaging.
The exhibition offered attendees an opportunity to explore practical applications of research and connect with industry representatives. It also highlighted efforts to meet the demands of comprehensive healthcare through new therapeutic solutions.
The forum concluded with a focus on continued cooperation and development within the pharmaceutical sector. Organizers said the event reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare systems and expand opportunities for scientific exchange at both regional and international levels.
