The United Nations has voiced its deep concern over the escalating violence in the northeastern region of Syria, particularly highlighting the ongoing clashes between tribal factions and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Deir ez-Zor. The UN’s spokesperson, Farhan Haq, stressed the need for all parties involved to abide by their international legal obligations and condemned the violence taking place in Syria.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated the importance of safeguarding civilians and civilian infrastructure in accordance with international law. Furthermore, he calls on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint to prevent further escalation in the region.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has issued a stark warning about the escalating hostilities in Deir ez-Zor province. Humanitarian workers and UN partners have reported the deaths of at least 54 civilians, including four children, since August 27th. Additionally, critical public infrastructure, including two hospitals and three water treatment facilities, has suffered extensive damage.

The OCHA emphasized that local partners on the ground have urged all parties to facilitate freedom of movement without any hindrances. They have also called for necessary measures to prevent attacks on healthcare facilities and other essential civilian infrastructure.

The United Nations has also acknowledged the intensification of hostilities in Idlib and northern Aleppo, resulting in the deaths of four civilians, including two children, and the displacement of over 500 families. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated that the UN and its partners are closely monitoring the situation and continue to provide assistance as required.

It is worth mentioning that Idlib province and the adjacent western Aleppo countryside have witnessed a significant escalation of violence by Syrian regime forces and Russia. Additionally, the northern and eastern rural areas of Aleppo have been subjected to shelling by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), resulting in civilian casualties.
