Sources within the judiciary have informed the Levant 24 (L24) news agency that Muyassar Ali al-Juburi, also known as Abu Maria Qahtani, is set to be released very soon.

The release comes amid a backdrop of controversy surrounding allegations of abuses within the prison system. Abu Maria Qahtani, a founder of Haya Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has been at the center of the storm.

In an official statement from August, 2023, HTS stated that a special commission had been formed to investigate allegations against Qahtani. The commission found that he had engaged in inappropriate communications without proper authorization, leading to his removal from his duties within HTS. Subsequent investigations, however, revealed a broader pattern of coerced confessions and false accusations implicating Qahtani in collaboration with foreign intelligence agencies, corruption, and abuse of his position.

The revelations have prompted the review of many cases, also believed to have been built upon the use of force and torture, resulting in the release of many detainees who had been subjected to similar interrogation tactics. Notable among them are military commanders like Abu Muslim Afes, Abu Osama Munir, Abu Khattab Al-Haskawi, and Abu Al-Qaqaa Fawaz.

Addressing the issue, HTS leader Abu Muhammad al-Jolani pledged to thoroughly investigate all cases through a special commission. In a video statement, al-Jolani acknowledged errors in the inquiry process, which led to false allegations and forced confessions under extreme pressure. He emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency, highlighting the formation of a judicial committee to address concerns raised by wrongfully accused individuals.

“We have constituted a judicial committee to support these brothers and ensure that their petitions are heard,” stated al-Jolani. “Despite past mistakes, we remain dedicated to restoring the rights of those affected by false allegations.” Some critics expressed doubts regarding changes within the security and judicial systems and demand the formation of an independent commission to further investigate the matter.
