Amidst growing public outrage over recent incidents of detainee abuse and arbitrary arrests, a pivotal meeting convened yesterday, March 5, in the heart of Idlib, northern Syria. The gathering, attended by public figures, citizens, and representatives of the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG), sought to address mounting demands for reform and improved living conditions, with a focus on rights and protections. Notable attendees included leaders from the communities of Idlib and Aleppo, as well as figures from Hayah Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), including its leader Abu Muhammad al-Jolani.

The meeting was prompted by widespread discontent following reports of detainee mistreatment, arbitrary arrests, and concerns over improper judicial conduct. In response, HTS and civilian voices alike called for immediate reforms of current polices and reification of past mistakes.

Recently, several initiatives have been undertaken to address the issues at hand. These include the establishment of a special investigative committee and judicial body, along with the release of individuals awaiting charges or under investigation. Additionally, a general amnesty was declared before Ramadan, aimed at mitigating tensions and fostering reconciliation.

A statement released following the meeting, announced the amnesty to the public and provided details of the those eligible for release. Clarifying it excludes individuals convicted of serious crimes such as drug-related offenses, murder, armed robbery, and violent offenses without the consent of victims.

During the assembly, the leadership pledged to engage directly with demonstrators to understand their demands and document grievances. Leaders expressed a commitment to implementing Islamic justice and the rule of law, starting with themselves, and ensuring fairness and equality for all individuals.

SSG Prime Minister, Engineer Muhammad al-Bashir, underscored the importance of addressing the legitimate demands of the people, particularly those related to service delivery and administrative procedures. He announced forthcoming measures to alleviate burdens on residents, including revisions to licensing procedures and fees.

Dr. Mustafa Al-Mousa, Head of the General Shura Council, emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in building and maintaining the region. He highlighted efforts to draft an inclusive election law, ensuring representation for all segments of society.

In his remarks, Abu Muhammad al-Jolani acknowledged the challenges faced by the liberated areas and emphasized the need for unity in achieving common goals. He pledged to listen to the demands of the people and work towards building a robust revolutionary project.

Moving forward, a committee comprising representatives from the Shura Council, government, tribes, and displaced populations will be tasked with reviewing demands and formulating actionable solutions. Periodic sessions will be held to facilitate ongoing dialogue and address evolving concerns. Activists have announced plans to organize large demonstrations this Friday.
