Washington witnessed significant diplomatic and economic activity in recent days as a high-level Syrian delegation from the Ministry of Energy, led by Energy Minister Muhammad al-Bashir, held a series of meetings with US officials and representatives of major energy companies.
The visit comes as the Syrian government seeks to rehabilitate the country’s energy sector while attracting foreign investment in support of reconstruction and development efforts. It also reflects growing interest among American businesses in potential opportunities within the Syrian market.
Exploring Opportunities in Oil and Gas
During the visit, Bashir held a bilateral meeting with HKN Energy President Mark Rollins in the presence of US Chamber of Commerce President Ross Perot Jr. Discussions focused on prospects for cooperation in the energy sector and opportunities to rehabilitate and develop Syria’s oil and gas infrastructure.
The Syrian delegation also participated in an expanded discussion session moderated by Khush Choksy, the US Chamber of Commerce’s vice president for Middle East affairs. Representatives from several major American companies attended the meeting, which explored potential partnerships in oil, gas, renewable energy and related logistics projects.
As part of the discussions, the Syrian delegation presented an overview of measures the government is pursuing to attract foreign investment and facilitate private-sector participation in future development projects.
Washington Signals Support for Cooperation
In a notable development, Bashir met with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. According to the Syrian side, US officials expressed support for efforts to develop Syria’s energy industry and encourage economic recovery. Discussions also highlighted the potential role of American companies in future investment projects.
Bashir said several US companies are already operating in Syria, which he described as a sign of growing confidence in the country’s investment climate. He added that the government is working to strengthen regulatory frameworks aimed at ensuring project sustainability and long-term success. Both sides agreed to continue dialogue and promote greater cooperation between government institutions and private-sector stakeholders to expand economic partnerships.
Egypt and Syria Discuss Joint Projects
Alongside the meetings in Washington, Bashir met with Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi to discuss energy cooperation between the two countries. Talks focused on opportunities for collaboration in the energy, petroleum and mineral resources sectors. Officials reviewed prospects for rehabilitation and investment projects in Syria, as well as potential partnerships that could emerge during the country’s reconstruction phase.
The two ministers also discussed future Syrian-Egyptian cooperation in developing energy infrastructure and supporting investment initiatives. Both sides agreed to continue efforts toward joint development projects designed to strengthen the sector and create new opportunities that could benefit both countries. The meetings in Washington highlighted Syria’s efforts to attract international investment and expand regional cooperation as it seeks to rebuild and modernize its energy sector.
