Syria and the Atlantic Council Strengthen Energy and Economics Cooperation


The Syrian capital witnessed two important meetings today between Syrian officials and a delegation from the DC-Based Atlantic Council, one of the most prominent American think tanks concerned with international affairs including ten regional centers and programs focused on international security and global economic prosperity. The two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the fields of energy, economy, and industry.

Focus on Traditional and Renewable Energy

Energy Minister Muhammad al-Bashir held a meeting with Will Wexler, Director of Middle East Programs at the Council, and his accompanying delegation. During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation and exchange views on various energy sector issues.

Minister Bashir reviewed the efforts made to advance the energy sector in Syria and the challenges it faces, stressing the importance of dialogue with specialized international institutions to exchange expertise and benefit from global experiences, particularly in the fields of traditional and renewable energy.

For its part, the Council’s delegation expressed interest in following developments in the Syrian energy sector, noting that they seek to enhance international cooperation and present approaches addressing issues of energy security, the environment, and sustainable economic development.

Expanding Horizons for Economic Cooperation

At the same time, Minister of Economy and Industry Muhammad al-Shaar held a separate meeting with a delegation from the Atlantic Council. They discussed ways of expanding cooperation and exchanging expertise in the economic and industrial fields.

During the meeting, held at the Ministry, the two sides discussed opportunities to develop partnerships on issues of mutual interest, contributing to supporting economic growth and enhancing the competitiveness of the national economy, in addition to expanding areas of international cooperation.

Minister Shaar emphasized that this meeting falls within the framework of the Ministry’s commitment to building bridges of cooperation with global research and think tanks, enhancing the position of the Syrian economy on the international stage and supporting its drive towards innovation and sustainability.

A Step Towards Strengthening International Cooperation

These meetings come within the framework of Syrian efforts to rebuild and develop its energy and economic sectors, through enhanced cooperation with specialized international institutions. They also reflect the international community’s interest in the evolving situation in Syria and the willingness of various parties to contribute to the reconstruction and development process.
