Major Mine Clearance Launched in Damascus Neighborhood

The National Mine Action Centre (NMAC), in coordination with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, announced the launch of large-scale operations removing war remnants, including landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), in the Jobar neighborhood of Damascus. This initiative represents a critical step in national efforts protecting civilians, securing affected areas, and paving the way for the safe and dignified return of displaced residents.

A Coordinated National and International Effort

The clearance operations are being carried out in close cooperation with the Damascus Governorate and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), alongside several local and international organizations specializing in war remnants clearance. This coordinated framework aims to ensure all activities are implemented in line with internationally recognized safety standards and technical procedures.

NMAC plays a central role in this complex operation by conducting non-technical and technical surveys of contaminated areas, assessing risks, and carrying out direct clearance and disposal activities. It is also responsible for Mine Risk Education (MRE) programs for local communities, in addition to providing technical and regulatory oversight for national teams and partner organizations.

Phased Implementation for Safety and Efficiency

Work in Jobar is being implemented through carefully planned sequential phases to maximize safety and operational efficiency. The initial phase focuses on securing and opening main and secondary roads, a crucial step that allows specialized teams to enter safely and begin rubble removal and clearance operations.

Subsequent phases will proceed according to an approved work plan, with full coordination among all concerned entities. This structured approach ensures the safety of both operational teams and residents, while clearly defining responsibilities between NMAC’s technical clearance mandate and the Damascus Governorate’s service role in rubble removal and recycling.

Part of a Broader National Recovery Plan

The Jobar clearance operation forms part of a wider national strategy led by the Ministry of Emergency to rid Syrian cities, towns, and lands of war debris. This comprehensive plan is essential for enhancing stability, supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts, and ensuring that families can return to their homes without fear or danger.

NMAC reaffirmed its commitment to continuing these vital efforts in cooperation with local and international partners, emphasizing that the ultimate objective remains the protection of lives and the creation of a safe environment that honors the sacrifices of the Syrian people.
