Damascus Conference Backs Youth Entrepreneurship Funding

A national conference in Damascus spotlighted funding and support for youth-led entrepreneurial projects, as participants examined the current state of entrepreneurship in Syria. The National Entrepreneurship Conference is organized by the Damascus Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Junior Chamber International in Syria. The event brings together business leaders and young innovators under the theme Reading Challenges and Anticipating Opportunities.

Discussions focused on identifying key obstacles facing young entrepreneurs while offering practical approaches to adapt to a shifting business environment. Held at the chamber’s headquarters, the event featured presentations from eight entrepreneurial projects. Five advanced to the final stage of the global Creative Young Entrepreneur competition, with finalists recognized for their work and given an opportunity to present their ideas on an international platform.

Economic Shifts Create Openings for Youth

Issam Ghreiwati, president of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce, said limited support in past decades contributed to the emigration of skilled Syrians, many of whom later contributed to economies abroad.

He noted recent economic developments, particularly in free trade, are creating new opportunities for young people in Syria. According to Ghreiwati, these changes could help foster entrepreneurship and encourage youth to pursue business ventures and professional growth within the country.

Plans to Strengthen Startup Ecosystem

Amer Kharboutli, director of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce, reaffirmed the institution’s backing for initiatives that support young entrepreneurs. He said such efforts can encourage innovation and contribute to improving the broader economic climate. Kharboutli added that the chamber is working to develop startup projects and plans to introduce an entrepreneurship award and business accelerator in the near future.

These initiatives aim to provide structured support for emerging businesses and strengthen their role in economic development. Organizers said collaboration with public and private stakeholders will be key to ensuring the success of these programs.

Youth Innovation Seen as Economic Driver

Samia Sarkis, president of Junior Chamber International in Syria, said supporting youth-led ventures can expand innovation, create jobs and contribute to economic stability. She emphasized empowering young entrepreneurs allows them to turn challenges into viable opportunities. Sarkis added that developing entrepreneurial skills among youth can help prepare a generation capable of contributing to reconstruction and long-term development efforts.

The Creative Young Entrepreneur competition, organized globally by Junior Chamber International, a nonprofit network active in more than 100 countries, established in Syria in 2004 focuses on developing leadership and business skills among young people. The program offers training, funding opportunities and networking platforms for participants.
