Revolutionary forces under the Command of Military Operations (CMO) coalition announced the liberation of the 46th Regiment military outpost in the western countryside of Aleppo on Wednesday. The base, a major Assad regime stronghold, has long been used as a launching point for attacks on liberated areas and holds immense strategic value for military operations in northwestern Syria.
The battle to reclaim the 46th Regiment was fierce and hard-fought, with CMO forces engaging in intense combat throughout the day. By the evening, they had fully cleared the site, securing one of the largest regime bases in northern Syria.
“This liberation marks a turning point in the struggle to protect our people and regain control of occupied lands,” said CMO Spokesman Hassan Abdulghani. “The 46th Regiment, once a platform for aggression against civilians, has now returned to the liberated areas, just as it was at the start of the Syrian revolution.”
Perched on a hilltop southeast of Atarib near the village of Orem al-Sughra, the 46th Regiment spans approximately 12 square kilometers (4.6 square miles). Sitting on the highest point between the liberated areas and the occupied city of Aleppo, it provides a dominating view of key settlements in the liberated areas such as Kafr Nouran, Kabtan, Jina, Abin, Atarib, and the Tal Karama Camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The base’s strategic location makes it a critical asset in the battle for Aleppo. It has been described as a “choke point” on the main Assad regime supply route between Idlib and Aleppo and has historically served as a supply and command hub for Assad’s operations in the region. “The 46th Regiment was a fortress of tyranny and a symbol of the regime’s aggression,” Abdulghani said. “Its liberation will enable us to push forward in reclaiming other occupied areas.”
The battle for the 46th Regiment was among the most intense since the operation began, with revolutionary forces facing heavy resistance from entrenched Assad regime units. The base, home to the 46th Regiment of the 15th Special Forces Division – a prestigious Assad military unit that fought in the Battle of Aleppo – was heavily fortified and fiercely defended.
Despite the hard-fought victory, regime forces have already retaliated. Airstrikes targeted the newly liberated outpost shortly after it was secured, signaling the regime’s desperation to regain control of the strategic hilltop.
The liberation of the 46th Regiment represents a significant milestone for revolutionary forces in their campaign to protect civilians and reclaim occupied territories in northern Syria. The base has been used extensively to launch artillery and rocket attacks on residential areas throughout Idlib and Aleppo provinces, contributing to mass displacement and widespread civilian suffering.
The forces of the Command of Military Operations aims to leverage the strategic advantages of the locale to consolidate their hold on liberated areas and disrupt regime supply lines in the region. With the 46th Regiment under their control, revolutionary forces have a platform to challenge regime positions and protect civilians from further aggression. As fighting continues in the region, the liberation of the 46th Regiment stands as both a tactical victory and a symbol of resistance against Assad regime forces and their allies.
