Qatar: Assad is the Root of the Problem in Syria

Foreign Ministers of Qatar and France.

In a press conference held last week in Doha, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani, addressed the issue of Syria alongside French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna. Al-Thani stated, “The root of our problem in Syria is the regime that has been bombing the people for more than 10 years.”

Qatar, a member of the Arab League, recently readmitted the Assad regime after nearly 12 years but has not yet normalized relations with Damascus. Al-Thani clarified, “We have no positions against Syria, as it is a brotherly and Arab country. However, the problem lies with the regime that has been displacing and bombing people for more than 10 years, and this is the crux of the issue.”

Furthermore, Al-Thani highlighted that while Qatar supports the regional efforts of other Arab states in resolving the Syrian crisis, they differ in the approach. Qatar aims to achieve a political solution in line with UN Resolution 2455 and “support a comprehensive political solution that satisfies the Syrian people.”
