April 19, Syrian authorities said they thwarted a planned rocket attack from southern Syria, arresting members of a cell accused of preparing strikes aimed beyond the country’s borders. The Interior Ministry described the plot as a “sabotage” attempt linked to Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
According to a ministry statement carried by the state news agency SANA, security forces seized a civilian vehicle modified to conceal rocket-launching equipment. Officials said the suspects intended to carry out a surprise attack from Quneitra province, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
The operation followed days of surveillance and intelligence tracking. “Members of the cell prepared a civilian vehicle in a camouflaged manner,” the ministry said, adding that authorities intercepted the group before the attack could be launched. Several suspects were arrested, and investigations are ongoing to determine the intended targets and the network’s broader reach.
Hezbollah Rejects Allegations
Hezbollah denied any involvement, calling the accusations “false and fabricated.” In a statement issued by its media relations office, the group said it has “no presence within Syrian territory and no activity there whatsoever.”
The statement added that Hezbollah is “astonished” by what it described as repeated attempts to link it to security incidents, accusing unnamed parties of trying to “distort the image of the resistance.” The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between Damascus and Hezbollah, particularly along the Syrian-Lebanese border, where both sides have accused each other of contributing to instability in recent months.
Linked Arrests and Expanding Investigation
The Interior Ministry said the Quneitra case may connect to a broader network. A day earlier, authorities announced the arrest of five individuals described as part of a “terrorist cell” operating across several areas. A security source indicated one detainee coordinated between that group and another linked to a failed bombing attempt in Damascus earlier this month.
Officials identified two suspects as Abdulhamid Zanouba and Adnan Zain, stating they engaged in activities that “threaten the security and safety of society.” Authorities continue to search for an additional suspect believed to be at large. The ministry said it will pursue further leads to uncover the structure of the network and prevent additional attacks.
Regional Reactions and Border Tensions
Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry expressed solidarity with Syria, rejecting any involvement by Lebanese citizens in actions that could undermine Syrian security. In a statement, Beirut condemned attempts to destabilize the country and affirmed support for maintaining territorial integrity.
The developments come amid heightened tensions in southern Syria. Local activists reported increased Israeli military activity in Quneitra, including patrols and the detention of a resident during a recent raid. Israeli forces have also expanded their presence in strategic area, raising concerns among residents about a prolonged occupation.
Against this backdrop, Syrian officials have intensified efforts to secure border regions and disrupt armed networks. Analysts say the latest operation reflects ongoing efforts to prevent cross-border attacks that could trigger wider escalation. While investigations continue, the incident highlights the fragile security environment along Syria’s southern border and the competing claims surrounding armed activity in the area.
